Controlling Common Household And Farm Pests

Pests cause losses worth millions of dollars in the United States alone every year. They will not only leave a trail of destruction, but some will also leave us grappling with all manner of diseases. The secret behind their destructive power is largely blamed on their numbers.

Some of the most common pests across the United States include rats, mice moths, flies, bedbugs, fleas, mosquitoes, raccoons, moths, ants, termites mosquitoes and crows. If your common pests situation is out of hand, you can click here for further insights. After a successful pest control program which involves fumigation, spraying, or extermination, there are several other ways of keeping them away.

Farm pests

These are pests that are known to attack growing crops, fruits, or stored cereals.

Mechanical methods

The use of mechanical methods to control them include building anti rodent silos, use of sticky boards, tilling the land to eliminate possible hiding places, using screens and barriers or using field vacuums.

Non-chemical methods

Non-chemical methods are usually safe for beneficial insects and animals. These methods include

  • Crop rotation. This helps in discouraging pests that target one particular crop.
  • Pest-resistant seeds. Using pest-resistant seeds goes a long way in discouraging some of the destructive pests and allow the crops to reach maturity.
  • Cover cropping, this method creates an environment that actively discourages the movement of pests.
  • Employing the services of animals or insects that eat the pests is also a way of controlling the pests.

Chemical methods

The choice of which chemical to use will depend on the attacking pests. Rodenticides are chemicals used to kill and control rodents, insecticides are used on insects, and fungicides are used to treat crop diseases, some of which are caused by the pests.

Household Pests

They include rodents, insects, arachnids, raccoons, and gastropods. These pests subject us to a lot of destruction and diseases. Different pests will require different pest management methods

Rodents

Rodents can be very destructive, and they can increase their numbers within a very short period. Seeking the services of a pest control expert is the best method when handling huge numbers. Other simple methods include properly storing dry foods, proper waste management, and neatness.

Insects

Some insects are classified as pests, they expose us to either destruction or disease-causing pathogens, some subject us to both. These insects include termites, cockroaches, bed bugs, fleas, moths, flies, and mosquitoes. The use of insecticides can eliminate most of these. Other cheaper management methods include cleanliness, proper waste management, and disrupting their colonies(ants and termites).

Raccoons

Raccoons can be controlled by constructing raccoon proof structures and proper waste management methods. This will play a huge role in discouraging their visits. If they are uncontrollable, it is vital to call relevant local wildlife authorities.

Gastropods

If snails and slugs invade your garden you there are two main ways to control their numbers either through the use of chemical or non-chemical methods.

Arachnids

Arachnids invade our homes in search of food which in most cases happens to be other pests. Their presence exposes us to their venomous bites or stings. They can be controlled best by eliminating their food sources and destroying their possible hideouts.
