Why Might You Need a New York Birth Certificate?
It may seem surprising that some people do not have copies of their own birth certificates, but it is actually not that uncommon. Maybe your parents never gave you a copy. Maybe it was lost in a fire, flood, or another natural disaster. It might have been lost with moving. It might have even been stolen (sometimes thieves target these documents for identity theft purposes). Sometimes, a person was adopted and never saw a copy of their original birth certificate, before it was changed. These are all reasons why someone might not have their New York birth certificate. But, why would they need it in the first place?
Here are some of the most common reasons a person might need their New York birth certificate.
You Want to Get Married–Showing a birth certificate is usually a requirement to obtain a marriage license. If you are planning to get married and do not have your birth certificate, you will want to make sure you have a copy before you go down to the courthouse to apply for the license. It is a good idea to put in your request for a copy of your birth certificate as far ahead of time before your planned marriage as possible, to avoid any delays in saying “I do.”
You Need to Get a Passport–If you are going to be doing any international traveling, or just want a passport handy in case you decide to take a trip on the spur of the moment, you will need a birth certificate. It proves you are a U.S. citizen and is one of the identifying documents required to obtain a passport. If you have a trip abroad already planned, make sure to give yourself plenty of time to obtain your New York birth certificate and passport before you buy your plane tickets.
You Intend to Enroll in School–Virtually any school, from K-12 schools to colleges to trade schools, will require your birth certificate as a condition of enrollment. It proves who you are and your citizenship, which indicates your eligibility to enroll in any school. It also proves your age, if there are age requirements for enrollment.
You are Undergoing a Background Check for a Job–If the job you are applying for requires a background check as a condition of employment, there are probably some documents you have to supply to your potential employer as part of the process. Your birth certificate is almost certainly going to be one of them, especially if there is a government security clearance involved in your new job.
As you can see, there are plenty of reasons why you need your birth certificate. You might also want one to find out who your birth parents were (if you were adopted), or to research your ancestors (by ordering their birth certificates). Whatever the reason, make sure you request it well before you need it, and always keep a copy of it afterward.
